This year, for the inaugural Motors & Masterpieces festival, which will take over the Melbourne Showgrounds from November 22-24, display sections will be split along ten distinct theme lines, each telling an important tale about the relationship between man and machine.
At the head of the queue is La Dolce Vita, an Italian phrase which simply translates into English as “The Sweet Life”.
The phrase is most famously associated with the 1960 seminal Italian film of the same name, as directed by Federico Fellini.
The film is a portrayal of Rome’s high society and the excesses of a hedonistic lifestyle, and beyond the movie, the term has come to represent a luxurious and carefree way of life.
Within the motoring realm, Italian post-war culture truly came to the forefront as an expression of driving excellence—it became an era when flair met head-on with automotive passion and engineering prowess, producing a breed of machinery that continues to stir the emotions of any red-blooded car lover.
Within Motors & Masterpieces, the best of Italian design from the 1950s, ’60s and ‘70s has a place to shine in La Dolce Vita.
Within the showcase, expect to see the best in breed from storied marques such as Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Lamborghini, and Lancia.
The entry to the category is also open to more bespoke manufacturers, such as Fiat’s performance tuning arm Abarth, Iso with its classic luxury lines such as the Grifo and Rivolta, while models such as the De Tomaso Pantera and Mangusta will also have a stage to shine on.
As forever is the case within the Italian automotive genre, the fantastic styling houses of the day will be stars.
Expect to see many fantastic examples from Pininfarina and Bertone featured.
